$4.5M raised so far to build powerful telescope

The man behind a project to build "the most powerful telescope on Canadian soil" says he's about $1.2 million away from beginning construction.
The One-Metre Initiative has raised $4.5 million toward construction of a telescope about 120 kilometres west of Ottawa in Ontario's Madawaska Highlands.

Three universities and a private company want to build Canadas newest observatory on a dark hilltop near Denbigh, in the Madawaska Highlands.
Elektra Observatories of Ottawa needs $2 million U.S. to build the One Metre Initiative, a telescope smaller than mountaintop giants like the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope in Hawaii, but in some ways more advanced.

A world-class observatory is being planned for the northern part of Frontenac County.
It will include "the highest-performance telescope on Canadian soil," according to the nonprofit organisation leading the campaign to build it, and it will be open to the public.

"Quite possibly it will be the best imaging telescope in the world open to non-professionals" - Frank Roy, an engineer and astronomy enthusiast who is now working full time on the Elektra Observatories project.
