Private space capsule's maiden voyage ends with splash

SpaceX's Dragon capsule successfully launched into Earth orbit aboard the company's Falcon 9 vehicle on Wed., Dec. 8. The flight is a demonstration test for NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program to develop commercial supply services to the International Space Station and encourage the growth of the commercial space industry. The Dragon capsule orbited the Earth before safely re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
NASA Administrator Bolden's Statement On Falcon 9 Launch
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden issued the following statement about SpaceX's launch of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule:
"While rocket launches from the Cape are considered a common occurrence, the historic significance of today's achievement by SpaceX should not be lost."
