A penumbral lunar eclipse will take place on February 9, 2009, the first of four penumbral lunar eclipses in 2009. It will also be the deepest of the four.
The eclipse will not be visible in the East coast of the United States, South America and southernmost Mexico, Western Africa and western Europe. Best visibility will be over most of Asia, the Western US, Mexico and throughout the Pacific region.

A lunar eclipse happens near the transiting moon nodes - now in Aquarius/Leo - when the Earth lines up with the Sun and the Moon, the Earth casts its shadow onto the Moon.
