Aborted Rocket Launch Shows Urgent Need to Develop Own Space Technology
The launch of Korea's first space rocket was halted at the last minute. The Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1, dubbed Naro, was scheduled to lift off at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The countdown began at 4:45 p.m but with just seven minutes and 56 seconds left on the clock, the blastoff was scrubbed. Mission control officials explained that there was a technical problem with the automated launch sequence system, but it looks like more time will be needed to find out the exact cause of the problem.

Software errors caused halt of Naro launch

Errors in the software related to measuring pressure have led to the halt of the launch of Korea's first space rocket, Naro, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said yesterday.
The automatic sequence, a system that checks valves and sensors in the rocket, detected a drop in pressure in a helium high-pressure tank and halted the liftoff with 7 minutes and 56 seconds remaining in the countdown on Wednesday. The tank operates various valves in the rocket.

South Korea has postponed the launch of its first space rocket-a two-stage vehicle- because of technical problems. The rocket had been set to launch on Wednesday from the Naro space complex, however, the countdown was halted just eight minutes before lift-off. The Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1), which has been developed with the help of Russia, is seeking to place in orbit the 100-kilogram Science and Technology Satellite-2 (STSAT-2) satellite. South Korea has already launched 10 indigenously produced satellites on other countries rockets. In April last year, Seoul sent its first astronaut into space aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket.
