Hang Son Doong cave (in Vietnamese: Hang Sn Dọng, meaning Mountain River Cave) is a cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. The cave is located near the Laos-Vietnam border. It has a large fast-flowing underground river inside.

Ancient sea cave on Skye 'still occupied'

A cave thought to have been occupied by people as early as 3BC was still being lived in this year, it has emerged.
A new hearth for a fire and stacks of wood cut for kindling were found in the L-shaped fissure at Leitir Fura, Kinloch, on Skye.

Fossil hunters in Australia have discovered a cave filled with the 15-million-year-old remains of prehistoric marsupials.
The rare haul of fossils includes 26 skulls from an extinct, sheep-sized marsupial with giant claws.
The finds come from the Riversleigh World Heritage fossil field in north-west Queensland.

The discovery of a remarkable 15-million-year-old Australian fossil limestone cave packed with even older animal bones has revealed almost the entire life cycle of a large prehistoric marsupial, from suckling young in the pouch still cutting their milk teeth to elderly adults.
In an unprecedented find, a team of University of New South Wales [Sydney Australia] researchers in has unearthed from the cave floor hundreds of beautifully preserved fossils of the extinct browsing wombat-like marsupial Nimbadon lavarackorum, along with the remains of galloping kangaroos, primitive bandicoots, a fox-sized thylacine and forest bats.

Mexico's Cave of Crystals stunned geologists when it was first discovered in 2000. The underground chamber contains some of the largest natural crystals ever found - some of the selenite structures have grown to more than 10m long. Professor Iain Stewart got a rare glimpse of the subterranean spectacle while filming for the new BBC series How the Earth Made Us.

Soua'ada Cave

The Syrian Society for Exploration and Documentation discovered recently in Sweida city (Southern Syria) the largest volcanic cave in the country, naming it Soua'ada Cave.
Secretary of the Society Khaled Nuwailati said the exploration and documentation committees organized a walk in December 18 2009 after receiving information on undiscovered caves in that area.

A massive cave recently uncovered in a remote Vietnamese jungle is the largest single cave passage yet found, a new survey shows.
At 80-by-80 metres in most places, the Son Doong cave beats out the previous world-record holder, Deer Cave in the Malaysian section of the island of Borneo.

New Witch of Wookey Hole: estate agent beats 300 rivals to the job
As Carole Bohanan is happy to acknowledge, it is a big step up in her career. From now on the estate agent from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, will be known as Carla Calamity, the Witch of Wookey Hole.
Miss Calamity, who admits to being several hundred years old - it would be impolite to ask how many - beat 300 other witches to the most coverted job in covendom.

A British caving team believe they've discovered the worlds largest cave passage in the heart of the Vietnamese jungle.
Measuring 200m high and 150m wide the new cave, called Hang Son Doong - or Mountain River Cave - is believed to be almost twice the size of the current record holder.

A seven-part YouTube video series titled Under Shnongrim.


Part 1 of a caving film about exploring underneath the Shnongrim ridge, in the Jiantia Hills, Meghalaya,India. The team consisted of 30 cavers from around the world and some local Meghalayian cavers. This film follows the discoveries made in 2008 - which was an expedition building on knowledge accumulated over the last 15 years. The cavers came up against a series of obstacles, pitches, loose rock and water filled passages.
