The story began on Sunday evening, when astronomers with the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona, discovered the incoming object, dubbed 2008 TC3. By the next morning, three organizations NASA's NEO office, the Minor Planet Centre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and NeoDys in Pisa, Italy confirmed that the asteroid was racing towards Earth. Calculations predicted the object would streak through the sky above a Sudanese village called Station Six, which has a population of about ten.

"Confirmation has been received that the asteroid impact fireball occurred at the predicted time and place. The energy recorded was estimated to be 0.9 to 1.0 kT of TNT and the time of detection was 02:45:45 on October 7 (Greenwich Standard Time). More details on this detection will be forthcoming. An addition confirmation was apparently reported by a KLM airliner. As reported by Peter Brown (University of Western Ontario, Canada), a preliminary examination of infrasound stations nearest to the predicted impact point shows that at least one station recorded the event. These measurements are consistent with the predicted time and place of the atmospheric impact and indicate an estimated energy of 1.1 - 2.1 kT of TNT."

According to reports on private newsgroups the impact blast was recorded at 05:10 UT, 7th October, by an International Monitoring System (IMS), infrasonic listening station (IS32) in Nairobi, Kenya.


Dr. Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario has inspected the data and he estimates that the asteroid hit at 0243 UTC with an energy between 1.1 and 2.1 kilotons of TNT. Most of the 3-meter-wide space rock should have been vaporised in the atmosphere with only small pieces reaching the ground as meteorites.

Airbursts of this size during the atmospheric entry of small asteroids are not uncommon, and occur somewhere over the globe every few months on average. Indeed many have been imaged in recent years by US Department of Defence satellites. The energy yield is equivalent to about one kiloton of TNT explosive.

Travel Warning

Travel anywhere in Sudan, including Khartoum and the adjacent town of Omdurman, is potentially dangerous. Sporadic violence instigated by militias has occurred in South Sudan. Militia forces have also attacked locations in the south. Threats have been made against foreigners working in the oil industry in Upper Nile state.
