John Lowry Dobson (born September 14, 1915) is a populariser of amateur astronomy. He is most notable for being the promoter of a design for a large, portable, low-cost Newtonian reflector telescope that bears his name, the Dobsonian telescope.

The man who revolutionised amateur astronomy with a cheap, easy-to-build telescope is at the Discovery Museum this week, spreading his infectious love for heavenly objects.
John L. Dobson's great contribution to science was the rugged Dobsonian telescope that can be built with cast-off construction materials a few pieces of scrap plywood, a cardboard concrete tube, an assortment of fasteners and a ship's porthole from a nautical salvage yard.
