Correction:

A top Iranian official corrected earlier reports by Iranian state media that a satellite had been sent into orbit, explaining that only a rocket had been launched.
According to state media, Saturday's test of the two-stage rocket, called the Safir, or Ambassador, was successful, as it broadcast footage of the night-time launch.
State TV said the Omid research satellite will gather atmospheric data from a low orbit but did not give a date for its launch.

Next week, Iran is to launch the country's first homemade satellite, named Omid (meaning, Hope), aboard a Iranian Kavoshgar-1 carrier rocket, stationed at Iran's new space centre, in northern Semnan province. The Kavoshgar-1 carrier rocket closely resembles the Iranian Shahab-3 missile.

The scientific research satellite will be placed into a low Earth orbit, and will help improve communication services, and also monitor natural disasters.

With a successful launch, Omid will be the countries second satellite in orbit; and Iran will become the 11th spacenation to build and launch its own domestic satellite since the Soviet Union successfully launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957. A Russian-made Iranian satellite, Sina-1, was launched aboard a Russian rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in October 2005.
