The first wholly home-designed and built telecommunications satellite for Japan has gone safely into orbit. The Superbird-7 spacecraft went up on an Ariane rocket from Europe's Kourou launch facility in French Guiana. Built by the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, the satellite will deliver TV and other services to Japan and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
An Ariane 5 rocket (Flight 185), with the Superbird-7 and AMERICOM-21 telecommunications satellites, was successfully launched from launch complex N° 3 (ELA3), in Kourou, French Guiana, 20:44 UTC, August 14th, 2008.
The Launch Readiness Review (RAL) took place in Kourou on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 and authorised count-down operations for the Superbird-7 & AMC-21 launch. On its fifth launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit two communications satellites, primarily intended for cable and direct TV broadcast services: Superbird-7 for Japanese operator Space Communications Corporation (SCC) in the scope of a contract with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) and AMC-21 for SES Americom, the American company of the SES group.
