Google adds coral reef panoramas to Street View maps

Panoramic images of several coral reefs have been added to Google's Street View service in its maps, allowing users to navigate their way around the sites.
The material was gathered by the Catlin Seaview Survey - a project studying the health of the reefs, including the impact of global warming.

Google Earth Ocean Terrain Receives Major Update

Internet information giant Google updated ocean data in its Google Earth application this week, reflecting new bathymetry data assembled by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, NOAA researchers and many other ocean mapping groups from around the world.
The newest version of Google Earth includes more accurate imagery in several key areas of ocean using data collected by research cruises over the past three years.

New Seafloor in Google Earth Tour

Explore the ocean seafloor with Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) Synthesis covering half of all of the ocean that has ever been mapped in detail, an area larger than North America. You can also view new data of Cordell Bank and the Gulf of the Farallones off of the California coast from California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) along with a beautiful 50 meter synthesis of the Hawaiian Islands from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (UHM-SOEST).

Google Earth enhances oceans' layer

How do you celebrate World Oceans Day? Well, if you're Google you make the oceans of the world's most impressive interactive digital globe, Google Earth, come alive. With oceanographers at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Google Earth has fine-tuned its oceans' resolution in selected areas from 1 kilometre to just 100 meters.

Starting today, armchair explorers will be able to view parts of the deep ocean floors in far greater detail than ever before, thanks to a new synthesis of seafloor topography released through Google Earth. Developed by oceanographers at Columbia Universitys Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory from scientific data collected on research cruises, the new feature tightens resolution in covered areas from the former 1-kilometer grids to just 100 meters.

Google Earth visualisation files were added as an available estuarine bathymetry product in July, 2006. Visualization files can be accessed for the entire country (kmz, 11KB) or are available by estuary using the data selection process.

The Estuarine Bathymetry Data Pages allow users to download the appropriate data sets for their specific project needs.

Seafloor imagery from a Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego scientist brings the oceans to life in a new version of Google Earth unveiled today. Scripps also contributed to Google Earth "Expedition Layer" with highlights from a two-and-a-half yearlong research voyage aboard Scripps' research vessel Melville, detailing its more than 100,000 nautical miles journey during 49 research missions to study the western Pacific Ocean.
Scripps professor of geophysics David Sandwell and Walter Smith of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supplied the global bathymetry data for the three-dimensional backdrop required for Google Earth users to explore the ocean world -- where marine life is thriving in unique communities near erupting deep-sea volcanoes and hydrothermal vents and where new islands are emerging from the seafloor.
