Virtual worlds and game companies typically let users join and/or play for free, and charge them when they want to upgrade their avatar and its accessories or enhance their gaming experience. Virtual goods also are exchanged online by members of social-networking sites, especially Facebook.
While virtual gifts are a tiny portion of Facebook's revenue, spokeswoman Brandee Barker says they are an important way for users to "exchange sentiments." The site went from selling "small iconic figures" earlier this year, to now selling gifts, including music and football helmets for specific sports teams

Rome was built in a day, with hundreds of thousands of digital photos
The ancient city of Rome was not built in a day. It took nearly a decade to build the Colosseum, and almost a century to construct St. Peter's Basilica. But now the city, including these landmarks, can be digitised in just a matter of hours.
A new computer algorithm developed at the University of Washington uses hundreds of thousands of tourist photos to automatically reconstruct an entire city in about a day.

An ancient Indian village comes to life in a startling display in Melbourne.

In a dark, circular room in Melbourne's Immigration Museum, a Chinese tourist is standing at the helm of a teleporter. She jerks the control stick to the left, causing the platform beneath her to swivel. Then she thrusts it forward, crashing into an ancient Indian temple.
Slowly, she moves around, left and right, back and forward, exploring every corner of this ornate edifice. The other tourists have fallen silent, their hands clasped and their heads reverentially lowered. Then, without warning, the woman yanks the stick back, reversing out of the temple and ploughing into an elaborate bathhouse. Everyone blinks in astonishment.

NASA wants to create a massive multiplayer online (MMO) game but doesnt want to pay for it.
The space agency wants a game-making studio to develop the game, which would be used to teach students about technical and scientific work. However, that company would most likely have to sign a nonreimbursable Space Act Agreement, meaning that there would be no funds exchanged between the space agency and the developer.
