UI to have more astronomy talks
UI's series of free, public talks celebrating the International Year of Astronomy 2009 will continue with "Star Clusters: Cities of Stars," by Steven R. Spangler, professor in the UI Department of Physics and Astronomy, from 8 to 9 p.m. today at the Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Centre near Mount Vernon.

Public Celebration of IYA2009 in Pasadena on June 6
The public is invited to a celebration of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) on Saturday, June 6, from 4-8 p.m. at the Pasadena (Calif.) Convention Centre, followed by public stargazing with small telescopes on the convention centre plaza until 9:30 p.m.
A variety of fun, family oriented, hands-on activities and exhibit booths will be provided, including solar observing and a 100-foot scale model solar system, presented by organisations attending the subsequent summer meeting of the American Astronomical Society, with special additions from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Representatives from the popular Astronomy Cast podcast and the Galaxy Zoo citizen-science project will be among the exhibitors in the indoor "AstroZone."  Special indoor presentations will be made using a portable planetarium and a digital data immersion environment from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

SPIE will commemorate 400 years of telescope technology with special astronomy-related activities, displays, and presentations during the SPIE Optics and Photonics symposium 2-6 August at the San Diego, California, Convention Center.
Declared the "International Year of Astronomy" by the United Nations, 2009 marks the anniversary of the first astronomical use of the telescope by Galileo. The telescope not only enabled astronomical exploration but triggered a scientific revolution that has profoundly affected our worldview.

On April 2, 2009, Canada Post  issued two domestic rate (54-cent) stamps to celebrate 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy and recognise the significant role that Canadians have played in uncovering the mysteries of outer space.

Serbia to extend support for astronomers
Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic inaugurated the International Year of Astronomy on February 8th. Djelic promised extended support to scientists and astronomers despite the global financial crisis, adding that knowledge is the top priority of the state.

In 1609, Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens and gave birth to modern astronomy. To commemorate four hundred years of exploring the universe, 2009 is designated the International Year of Astronomy. NASA's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory - are marking the occasion with the release of a suite of images at over 100 planetariums, museums, nature centers, and schools across the country in conjunction with Galileo's birthday on February 15. The selected sites will unveil a large, 9-square-foot print of the spiral galaxy Messier 101 that combines the optical view of Hubble, the infrared view of Spitzer, and the X-ray view of Chandra into one multiwavelength picture.

In a rare honour, Indian-American physicist Mani Bhaumik has been chosen as the sole patron for the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) are observing 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's astronomical telescope.

Announcing his appointment on Wednesday, the IAU said "it is proud to have Dr. Mani Bhaumik as dedicated supporter of IYA2009's global activities."

As the world celebrates 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, Indian astronomers will showcase their feat in a tableau of the Department of Science and Technology at this year's Republic Day parade.
The Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore has designed the tableau on behalf of the department.
