Planet Earth just got a blast from the past. Mounting evidence indicates that a bona fide meteoroid created the new crater west of Lake Titicaca in Peru. Most convincing are the seismic shock, the scatter of iron-rich rock fragments and eyewitness reports of a bright fireball accompanied by a thunderous roar. Once again, humanity has been reminded that we are not in charge.
Larger forces are at work. Though trivial by geological standards, the meteoroid had a dramatic impact on the villagers of Carancas, near the Peru-Bolivia border. Hundreds were reported ill due to some combination of local changes in atmospheric chemistry and psychosomatic shock. I suspect that even the most ardent atheists among them were brought to their knees in humility.

One of the first scientists to visit the site of a sensational meteor strike in Peru was Lionel Jackson, of the Geological Survey of Canada, who was working nearby when a fireball scorched across the sky over Lake Titicaca a little over a week ago.
Back in his Vancouver office yesterday, Dr. Jackson discounted wild theories that clouds of alien viruses were released in the collision or that the foreign body that blasted into the earth, near Carancas, in Peru's Puno province, Sept. 16, was really a spy satellite.
Dr. Jackson says there's little doubt the crater left in the muddy ground in a farming district was created by a meteor that came from space "travelling at a number of times the speed of sound."

Yesterday, Puno, Peru's Regional Tourism Directorate announced that the area around the crater would be roofed and turned into a tourist attraction for all those that wanted to see the large crater.

Last Saturday night at approximately 10:00 pm, villagers of Carancas , in the region of Puno, Peru stated that they witnessed a fiery orange object streaking across the night sky and ultimately crashing to the ground, emitting a loud explosion near their village.
