Today, the European Commission has signed an agreement confirming the transfer of funds to ESA for the initial operations of the space component for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme. The agreement, which secures 104 million euro, was signed at ESA Headquarters in Paris by Heinz Zourek, Director General of the European Commission's DG Enterprise and Industry, and Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of ESA. The European Space Agency (Esa) has ordered up the first bespoke spacecraft in its new global monitoring programme. Sentinel 1 is the first Earth observation satellite to be built for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) project.
ESAs Director General, Jean-Jacques Dordain, and President and CEO of Thales Alenia Space, Pascale Sourisse, signed the contract on behalf of the Italian branch of the company Monday at the International Paris Air Show Le Bourget.
