The first launch from a submarine occurred in July 1953 from the deck of USS Tunny (SSG-282), a World War II fleet boat modified to carry Regulus. Tunny and her sister boat USS Barbero (SSG-317) were the United States's first nuclear deterrent patrol submarines. They were joined in 1958 by two purpose built Regulus submarines, USS Grayback (SSG-574), USS Growler (SSG-577), and, later, by the nuclear powered USS Halibut (SSGN-587).

The Royal Navy's biggest and most powerful attack submarine is due to arrive at Faslane on the Clyde later.
Astute which measures nearly 100m from bow to stern, set sail from Barrow in Cumbria for its first sea trials on Tuesday. The vessel can be armed with 38 torpedoes and missiles - more than any previous Royal Navy submarine. It will sail into the Clyde and up the Gareloch to its new home at the Scottish naval base.

India on Sunday launched the first nuclear-powered submarine built on its soil, joining just five other countries that can design and construct such vessels, the prime minister's office announced.
The Indian navy flooded a dry dock housing the 112-meter-long submarine to send it out for trials at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

In what will mark a quantum leap for India's shipbuilding capabilities, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will launch the country's first indigenously designed and built nuclear-powered attack submarine at a quiet function at Visakhapatnam by the month-end but it could be a while before the vessel is commissioned, an official said.

The man who located the wreck of the Titanic has revealed that the discovery was a cover story to camouflage the real mission of inspecting the wrecks of two Cold War nuclear submarines.
When Bob Ballard led a team that pinpointed the wreckage of the liner in 1985 he had already completed his main task of finding out what happened to USS Thresher and USS Scorpion.
Both of the United States Navy vessels sank during the 1960s, killing more than 200 men and giving rise to fears that at least one of them, Scorpion, had been sunk by the USSR.

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.
At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.
That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

US submarines are designed for speed and stealth. The Navy takes great pains to keep this technology a secret. The most critical part of that secret is the design of the propellers that drive the subs and keep them quiet.
Whenever the submarine is brought into the graving dock for service, one of the first things that they do is cover the propeller with a tarp so that it can not be photographed. Evidently, if you know what they look like, you can figure out how to copy them and make your subs quiet too.
