The bidding war between the two Hollywood stars was intense as the price soared for the 67 million-year-old dinosaur skull.
Only when it reached $276,000 did Leonardo DiCaprio blink - and Nicolas Cage walked away from the Beverley Hills auction with a ferocious-looking addition to his fossil collection.
As this recent battle of the celebrities for the head of a tyrannosauras bataar the Asian cousin of T-rex proved, dinosaur bones are emerging as the new, collectible must-haves for the multi-millionaires of Hollywood, Wall Street and Silicon Valley.

Administrative Court yesterday nullified a cabinet resolution which had scaled back the size of a protected site of fossilised mud snail layers to make way for industrial mining, sounding a victory for villagers in Lampang. The verdict came after a group of villagers petitioned the Administrative Court in 2003, seeking protection for a 13-million-year-old fossil site in Mae Moh district from mining activity.

Scotland is pioneering a new project to protect the planet's ancient fossils with the launch of the world's first national Fossil Code.
The code has been created to stop the damage caused by irresponsible collectors who use crowbars, sledgehammers and power saws in their search for relics.
Fossil sites in Skye, Caithness, Ayrshire and Lesmahagow in South Lanarkshire are all under threat from the problem, according to Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) who developed the initiative.
It is hoped the project will put an end to the illegal trade of fossils.

Scotland has a remarkably rich geological heritage that spans nearly 3 billion years of Earth's history. Part of this 'Earth heritage', is the record of the development and evolution of life on Earth in the form of fossils. Comprising the remains and traces of plants and animals from the geological past preserved in rock, the fossil heritage has a crucial role in elucidating Scotland's geological development, and allows the correlation of Scotland's rock sequences with those worldwide.
Fossils are an irreplaceable and finite resource used for scientific investigation, education, recreation and commercial purposes. However, this element of Scotland's Earth heritage is vulnerable to abuse, damage and neglect and consequently requires considered management and a degree of safeguarding to ensure its survival for future generations.
