On October 1, 2007 the Central Bank of the Russian Federation puts into circulation a silver proof commemorative coin of 3 Rubles denomination dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of launching the first artificial Earth satellite, and commemorative coins of non-ferrous metals of the series "Ancient Russian Towns" of 10 Rubles denomination devoted to Vologda, Veliky Ustyug, Gdov.

Reginald Turnill, former BBC Space Correspondent and winner of the Arthur C Clarke Lifetime Achievement Award 2006, is to give an open lecture at the University of Kent on Wednesday 23 May.
Titled 50 years: Russias Sputnik-1 to Apollo and the Space Shuttle, his lecture will take place at 6pm in the Brabourne Lecture Theatre, Keynes College. Open lectures are free and open to all. There is disabled access to Keynes College and the lecture theatre.
Reginald Turnill has covered manned spaceflight since its inception in 1961, reporting on the space race between Russia and the USA and witnessing first-hand every major American spaceflight.
