Junk-sale diamond fetches over $800,000 at auction

A diamond that was snapped up at a junk sale for 10 pounds ($13) has sold at auction in London for 656,750 pounds ($836,000).
The gemstone, which has been dubbed the "tenner" diamond, was bought as a ring at a flea market in West London in the 1980s, and then worn for many years by its oblivious owner, who had no idea it was a genuine 26.27-carat, cushion-shaped white diamond.

'Car boot-sale' diamond set to fetch 350,000 at auction

A diamond ring bought for 10 at a car-boot sale 30 years ago is expected to fetch 350,000 at auction.
The owner believed the "exceptionally sized" stone was a piece of costume jewellery when she bought it at West Middlesex Hospital in Isleworth, west London, in the 1980s.
Unaware it was a 26 carat, cushion-shaped white diamond from the 19th Century, she wore it daily for decades.

Pink Star diamond sets new world record in Hong Kong

A rare diamond known as the Pink Star has been sold in Hong Kong for more than $71m (57m), setting a new world record for any gemstone at auction.
The oval-shaped 59.6 carat stone was bought after just five minutes' bidding at Sotheby's, reports said.

Sierra Leone pastor finds huge diamond in Kono

A Christian pastor has discovered one of the world's largest uncut diamonds in Sierra Leone's Kono district.
The diamond, weighing 709 carats, is now locked up in Sierra Leone's central bank in Freetown. It is one of the 20 largest diamonds ever found.
Freelance, or artisanal, miners are common in Sierra Leone's diamond-rich areas, reports the BBC's Umaru Fofana.

Australia: Carbon dating reveals 2,000-year-old pearl

Archaeologists have said that a natural pearl unearthed in a remote part of western Australia is more than 2,000 years old.
The pearl is described as "irreplaceable" by one of the senior researchers on the project, as it's the only one ever recovered from an ancient site in Australia.

Mining company in South Africa finds rare blue diamond

A rare blue diamond has been unearthed at a mine in South Africa.
The 25.5-carat stone was recovered by Petra Diamonds at its Cullinan mine and is expected to bring large profits.
Experts say it could be worth more than $10 (6m), and the find gave a boost to Petra's share price.

Princie Diamond: Rare Indian gem may sell for a record

One of the largest pink diamonds in the world is to be auctioned on Tuesday by Christie's in New York for what experts say could be a record-breaking price.
The Princie Diamond is expected to sell for more than $45m, beating a 2010 record diamond sale of $44m in London.
