ABC News is reporting that someone stole Astronaut Laurel Clark's wedding ring after her body was recovered. The ring, which Clark wore on a chain around her neck while in orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, was still on her when she was found. According to a report ABC News received during their investigation into Robert Cobb, NASA's inspector general,

"The remains of deceased astronaut Laurel Clark were recovered shortly after the Columbia accident, and a ring was allegedly present on, and then stolen from her recovered remains."

ABC says the Texas Rangers were in charge of investigating the theft. They wanted to appeal to the public through Crime Stoppers in an effort to recover the ring. Laurel's husband, Jonathan, also wanted his wife's ring found, but was told by Robert Cobb that if news of the theft came out it would tarnish NASA's reputation.
Video shot on that Columbia mission shows Clark laughing as she works on experiments on the shuttle's middeck, the ring floating on the chain in zero gravity.
It was Clark's first mission, and her last. She died when Columbia broke up over Texas on Feb. 1, 2003, leaving behind her husband, Jonathan, and her son, Iain.
