Work by archaeologists to uncover the secrets of Bury Mount in Towcester is due to start on 16 October after the site was cleared of trees and bushes during the summer.
Northamptonshire Archaeology have been contracted by South Northamptonshire Council to investigate the Moat Lane site for six to eight weeks. It is hoped that the work will bring together and build on the findings from various other digs and investigations at the site in previous years. The Council bought Bury Mount in 2004 from the Hesketh Estate using money from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Plans to regenerate the Moat Lane site are still being developed but will include clearing and investigating the Bury Mount site and improving access to the Scheduled Ancient Monument for residents and visitors. Bury Mount is a medieval motte but it is thought that there was a building on the site at least as far back as the Roman period, when Towcester was settled as a Roman garrison town, and possibly older as Towcester is one of the oldest towns in Northamptonshire.
