The Domesday Book has been digitised by the UK National Archives, and is now available online.
The Domesday Book is one of our earliest surviving public records, and the foundation document of The National Archives.
The census and inventory was ordered by William the Conquerer in 1085, 19 years after he took charge of England following the Battle of Hastings. The Norman king wanted to know what taxes were at his disposal that could be used to raise an army.
