Hurricane Irene puts NASA space centres on alert

NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va., shut down at 12 p.m. EDT (1600 GMT) today to give workers time to make their own preparations for Irene's arrival. The centre is expecting severe flooding from the storm surge generated by Irene.

Wallops Island first Tiamat Research Rocket launch

Since 1945, NASA's Wallops Flight Facility has launched more than 15,000 rockets from Wallops Island for science studies, technology development, and as targets for the U.S. military.
The first test rocket was launched on June 27, 1945. The first research rocket, a Tiamat, was launched several days later on July 4.

NASA is proposing to install 80 acres of solar panels at its Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore to eventually create enough power to provide electricity for 850 homes.

NASA Ushers In New Space Exploration Era At Wallops Flight Facility
 
NASA ushered in a new era of space exploration at its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Tuesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony opening the new Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF).
The HIF will support medium-class mission capabilities. The first customer to use the facility will be Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., with its Taurus II launch vehicle.

NASA will unveil its new rocket integration facility at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. EDT on March 22.

Virginia's aerospace industry last year contributed $7.6 billion to the economy and supported over 28,000 jobs, or 0.8 percent of total employment in the state, according to an economic impact study released this month.
The study, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Aviation and conducted by the Performance Management Group at Virginia Commonwealth University in partnership with Chmura Economics and Anlaytics, is the first comprehensive analysis of the aerospace industry's economic impact in the state, according to a press release from Gov. Bob McDonnell's office.

NASA Selects Contractor For Wallops Island Protection Project

NASA has selected the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) in Norfolk, Va., for the Launch Facilities Protection Project at the agency's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va. The total contract value is not to exceed $49.5 million. The period of performance is five years.

NASA's Wallops facility to host open house

The public is invited to see the research that is driving the excitement surrounding NASA's Wallops Flight Facility during an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 5.
Gates will open at 9:30 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.
