A British tabloid the Sun is to take on the task of running the UK's UFO-report bureau after cash-strapped Ministry of Defence chiefs closed it down last year. The paper says its public-spirited move has been endorsed by Professor Colin Pillinger CBE.

"The Sun is right to keep the UFO files going. You have an army of readers who could flag up something extraordinary. Even if it is not alien life, it could be a meteorite which are of great value to the scientific community" - Professor Colin Pillinger CBE.

The Ministry of Defence has closed its UFO unit after more than 50 years of investigating reported UK sightings.
A hotline and e-mail address for the public to report possible sightings was shut on 1 December because it had no "defence value", the MoD said.
The officer handling reports has moved to another post, saving £44,000 a year.

Alien object in Ottawa River could be logs
There's a lot of junk at the bottom of the Ottawa River, and while police found a large mass while searching the water this week, it probably isn't as fishy as an alien spaceship.

Dozens of residents of Canada's capital city, Ottawa Ontario and nearby Gatineau, Que., witnessed an object streak across the night sky at about 10pm local time Monday night and crash into the Ottawa River with a "thunderous boom."
The object had lights on it and appeared to change course several times, like a small plane struggling to stay airborne, before it hit the water.

April UFO reports
A Florida witness watched as a cylinder-shaped neon green fireball moved across the sky over a 4-5 second period on April 7, according to witness testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.
In other UFO traffic news this week from MUFON, a New York witness wants help identifying an image he found after downloading them to his computer - is this April 5 photograph a cloud or something else? In Colorado on April 6, a disc-shaped object that was apparently morphing in shape was spotted. A fireball streaked across the sky over Montana on April 6, and just when the witnesses were reacting in awe over seeing what they assumed was a meteor, the object shot back up into the sky.

Fighter pilots were put on red alert in a UFO drama over Germany, it emerged yesterday.
Air traffic controllers tracked a mystery object speeding across the entire country.
Investigators have checked and excluded conventional aircraft, weather balloons and freak atmospheric conditions.

"We have ruled out all the conventional possibilities - it is a mystery...It confused radar operators because it kept flicking on and off the screen. Then it simply vanished" - Axel Raab of Germanys air traffic safety office, the DFS.

There were dozens of reports of the object as it flew across southern Germany on January 19.
It vanished above an area used by US troops on training exercises.
