NGC 3938 (also Opimus Ursae Majoris, IRAS11502+4423, MCG 7-25-1, UGC 6856, and PGC 37229) is a magnitude +10.9 unbarred face-on spiral galaxy located 43 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major. 
NGC 3938 can be found about 4° south-east of Chi Ursa Major (HD 102224).

The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 6th February 1788

The galaxy has hosted supernovae 1961U, SN 1964L, SN 2005ay and SN 2017ein.

Right ascension 11h 52m 42.9s, Declination +44° 07' 17"

The spiral arms of the galaxy contain many areas of ionized atomic hydrogen gas, more so towards the center.
