New Zealand space launch is first from a private site

An American company has launched a rocket into space from New Zealand, the first from a private launch facility.
Rocket Lab's 17m-long Electron lifted off from the Mahia Peninsula, in the North Island, the firm said.
The test flight was the first launch from New Zealand and is a major first step in an emerging market: launching cheap disposable rockets to carry small satellites and other payloads.
The company plans to start frequent commercial launches later this year.
Poor weather conditions had pushed the launch into the fourth day of a 10-day window and the Electron finally cleared its pad at 16:20 local time (04:20 GMT).

New Zealand space launch has nation reaching for the stars

New Zealand has never had a space program, but it could soon be launching commercial rockets more often than the United States.
That's if the plans of California-based company Rocket Lab work out.
Founded by New Zealander Peter Beck, the company was last week given official approval to conduct three test launches from a remote peninsula in the South Pacific nation.
Rocket Lab is planning the first launch of its Electron rocket sometime from Monday, depending on conditions.
