World's first quantum satellite to run official experiments

The Chinese Academy of Sciences said on October 12, 2016 that the world's first experimental quantum communication satellite is running well and official experiments will begin in November following completion of all in-orbit tests.

Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS), nicknamed Micius or Mozi in honour of a fifth century BC Chinese philosopher, lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center using a Long March-2D (Chang Zheng-2D) launch vehicle at 1:40 AM local time (17:40 UTC) August 16, 2016.
The satellite is in a 500 km sun-synchronous orbit.
