NGC 537 (also Arp 158, NGC 523, IRAS 01225+3345, MCG 6-4-18, UGC 979 and PGC 5268) is a magnitude +12.7 spiral (?) galaxy located 219 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda.

The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Datchet, Berkshire on the 13th September 1784.
The galaxy was rediscovered by Heinrich d'Arrest in August 1862 and relisted as NGC 523
