NGC 3871 (also IC 2959, MCG 6-26-31, MCG 9-25-16, UGC 6744 and PGC 36702) is a magnitude +14.8 spiral galaxy located 445 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 3rd April 1831. The galaxy was rediscovered by Stephane Javelle on the 11th June 1896 and relisted as IC 2959.
