NGC 5983 (also MCG 1-40-12, UGC 9983 and PGC 55845) is a magnitude +13.9 elliptical galaxy located 566 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by German astronomer Albert Marth using a 121.92 cm (48 inch) reflector at William Lassell's Tigné Point observatory in Sliema, Malta, on the 25th March 1865.
