Asteroid Looks Even Better Second Time Around

Asteroid 1998 WT24 safely flew past Earth on Dec. 11 at a distance of about 4.2 million kilometers, 11 lunar distances. During its flyby, NASA scientists used the 70-meter DSS-14 antenna at Goldstone, California, to probe it with microwave transmissions. Using this technique, they created the highest-resolution radar images of the asteroid.

Magnitude: 11.4
Distance to Earth: 0.030 AU, 11.6 lunar distances
Distance to Sun: 1.012 AU

The 700 - 1600 metre wide asteroid 1998 WT24 will make a close pass (69.2 lunar distances, 0.1779 AU), travelling at 14.85 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 23rd December, 2012 @ 07:34 UT ±00:01.
