Atomic Bomb Test 70th Anniversary Source of Pride, Anger

The unknown blast came during rainy season in the desolate New Mexico desert.
Most residents of the historic Hispanic village of Tularosa had no phones or radios. So when word spread that Army officials said it was just an ammunition explosion, anxious residents relaxed despite the raining ash.

Trinity was the code name of the first nuclear weapons test of an atomic bomb. This test was conducted by the United States Army on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 56 km southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, at the White Sands Proving Ground, now the White Sands Missile Range.
