NASA launches sounding rocket from Wallops Island

NASA launched a Terrier-Improved Orion suborbital sounding rocket this morning from the Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore.
The rocket, carrying 17 educational experiments built by university instructors and students from across the country, lifted off at 6:40 a.m. According to an announcer on the space agency's webcast of the launch, the rocket can reach 2,902 mph maximum velocity.

Seventeen educational experiments will fly June 21 on a Terrier- Improved Orion suborbital sounding rocket from NASAs Launch Range at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
Based on the approved range schedule, the rocket is set for launch between 6 and 10 a.m. EDT. The backup launch days are June 22 and 23. The rocket will be visible to residents in the Wallops region. The NASA Visitor Centre will open at 5 a.m. on launch day for viewing the launch.

The  is scheduled to take place at the Wallops Flight Facility on the 21st June, 2012.

RockON is an annually recurring mission associated with the RockON workshop held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre's Wallops Flight Facility each summer. This workshop provides college students and instructors with a hands-on, university-level rocket flight training experience.
