The Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker NS Rossiya ("Russia") has arrived at the Severny Polyus-38 (SP-38) polar station to help the 16 scientists living there  relocate to a new Arctic drift station.
The SP-38 polar station was established on an 7 x 12 kilometre Arctic ice floe in the Chukchi Sea on the 15th October, 2010.
Once a suitable ice floe is found for the polar scientists, the new SP-39 polar station will serve as home for the next year. The scientists will conduct polar studies and gather further scientific evidence to reinforce Russia's claims to the Arctic.
The NS Rossiya carries two helicopters.

North Pole-1 was the first Soviet manned drifting station, primarily used for research.
North Pole-1 was established on May 21, 1937, and officially opened on June 6, some 20 kilometres from the North Pole by the expedition into the high latitudes Sever-1, led by Otto Schmidt.
