Ice-locked ship to drift over North Pole

It is being billed as the biggest single Arctic research expedition ever planned. Germany is going to sail its 120m-long research vessel, the Polarstern, into the sea-ice at the top of the world and just let it get stuck so it can drift across the north pole.
The 2,500km trip, to begin in 2019, is likely to take a year.

Research ship Polarstern returns from Antarctica - investigations of changes in Weddell Sea habitat

The research vessel Polarstern of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association will arrive back at its homeport of Bremerhaven after a seven-month expedition on Friday, 20 May. Nearly 200 researchers from institutes in 15 countries took part in the expedition.
