An influential Norfolk-born archaeologist, Lewis R. Binford, died earlier this week.
Binford was professor emeritus at Southern Methodist University and the University of New Mexico. He died Monday in Kirksville, Mo., according to SMU. He was 79.

Ed ~ On May 27, 2010, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) announced that asteroid (213629) Binford was named in honour of Binford, for his contributions to the field of archaeology.
Asteroid (213629) Binford (2002 QK67), was discovered on the 28th August, 2002, by NEAT at Palomar.
