Hes been getting a lot of press lately because he's tackling some pretty heavy problems in astrophysics, including relativity.
I want to be clear that from the videos on YouTube and such, he does appear to have an extremely advanced grasp of math and science. I also think he has a lot of promise! However, science is more than just learning the equations. It takes insight that generally comes with time. Happily, Mr. Barnett has that time, and has a big head start with the basics.

Even for kids with Aspergers, Jacobs math skills seem to be off the charts. His brain is wired for numbers. His mother reports that Jacob has difficulty sleeping because his mind is always racing with numbers and mathematical concepts. This sounds similar to those people who can remember every tiny detail of every day of their lives, but are constantly distracted by intrusive memories.
But what about Jacobs claim that he has found some flaws with the Big Bang theory and relativity? Jacob has clearly learned a lot of astrophysics, but here I think his age and immaturity is showing.

A 12-year-old child prodigy has astounded university professors after grappling with some of the most advanced concepts in mathematics.
Jacob Barnett has an IQ of 170 - higher than Albert Einstein - and is now so far advanced in his Indiana university studies that professors are lining him up for a PHD research role.
Jake has embarked on his most ambitious project yet - his own 'expanded version of Einstein's theory of relativity'.

Ed ~ imagining other universes and messing about with constants, and then working if they expand or instantly collapse, or even figuring our their properties are a bit beyond my capabilities. But, without seeing the mathematics, i would be cautious about giving this "expanded version of Einstein's theory" any credence.
