The Soviet Vostok 3KA-2 Space Capsule sold at Sotheby's auction for $2.88 million to a Russian businessman in New York on Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Yury Gagarin's historic conquest of space.
The Space Capsule sold at the lower end of the $2-10 million range expected by the auction house.

Eighteen days before Gagarin's flight, the Vostok 3KA-2 rocket blasted into space and safely brought home a little dog named Zvezdochka and a mannequin in a spacesuit.
On Tuesday, Sotheby's in New York City will auction off that space capsule, which is the only Vostok capsule outside Russia.

This historic Soviet capsule was sent into space on March 25, 1961. Vostok 3KA-2 was such a triumph, that Soviet decision-makers were convinced the time had come to launch the first man into space.

Just weeks before the first man shot into outer space in 1961, the Soviets launched a dress rehearsal with a duplicate of the space capsule carrying a cosmonaut mannequin and a live dog.
The Vostok 3KA-2 spacecraft - a twin of the Vostok 3KA-3 that later carried cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin - is being auctioned in New York on April 12, the 50th anniversary of the manned mission.
