Satmex-6, a high-power, state-of-the-art communications satellite built for Satelites Mexicanos S.A. de
C.V. (Satmex) by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), was successfully launched on May 27th at 2:09pm Pacific Daylight Time. The satellite was sent into orbit aboard an Ariane 5 ECA rocket from Arianespace's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. SS/L is a subsidiary of Loral Space & Communications.

"With a combination of flight-proven, heritage satellite technology and advanced systems, Satmex-6 is one of the most powerful and sophisticated satellites that has ever been built for the Americas. SS/L is proud to work with Satmex to provide an advanced satellite that will play an integral role in serving the ever-expanding communications needs of the Americas" - Patrick DeWitt, president, Space Systems/Loral.

From its orbital position at 113 degrees West longitude, Satmex-6 will provide Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) over the Americas in both C- and Ku-band during its 15-year specified mission life. The satellite offers hemispheric C- and Ku-band footprints, switchable coverage in both C-band and Ku-band, and high-power coverage of South America and the Caribbean.
Satmex-6 carries 60 transponders: 36 C-band transponders providing full 50-state coverage of the United States, Central and South America, and 24 Ku-band transponders serving all 50 United States, Mexico, Central and South America, with concentrated coverage areas over major cities in South America.

Satmex, the leading Mexican satellite operator in the Americas, offers broadcast, telephone, and telecommunications services to 37 countries. Satmex also supports the development of rural and remote regions of the Americas with distance learning and rural telephony services. Through its business partners in the NAFTA region and Latin America, Satmex provides high-speed connectivity to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Digital Broadcast Services (DBS).

Today's success was Arianespace's second Ariane 5 ECA heavy-lift mission in 2006, and the 23rd successful flight for the Ariane 5 launcher family. In just over nine months, a total of six Ariane 5s have been used by Arianespace to deliver a total of 11 satellites into geostationary transfer orbit.

Europe's Ariane 5-ECA rocket has set a new record for a commercial, dual-payload satellite launch.

Saturday's flight lofted the Thaicom 5 and Satmex 6 spacecraft - a combined mass of 8.2 tonnes.
The launch marked the Ariane 5's second flight this year and only the fifth in its heavy-lift configuration.
The ECA has the power to push payloads of 10 tonnes towards a geostationary orbit, 36,000km above the Earth.
Lift-off occurred without any delay at 1809 local time (21:09 GMT).

The 5,456-kg Satmex spacecraft will deliver telecommunications coverage over the continental United States, Mexico and South America.
The 2,766-kg Thaicom 5 will provide telecom and TV services for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Arianespace, the company tasked with operating Europe's rockets, has now launched more than 230 satellites since its first Ariane mission in 1984.

It expects to carry out four more launches this year.

Arianespace said Thursday it has scheduled the next launch of its Ariane 5 ECA heavy-lift vehicle for May 26. The heavy-lift mission will carry a payload of 9.1 tons (8,250 kilograms) - representing the combined weight of the Satmex 6 and Thaicom 5 satellites.

The launch is the second this year for Arianespace from Europe's Spaceport, and the company said it is planning four more launches in 2006.
Satmex 6 is based on a Space Systems/Loral FS-1300X satellite bus. It carries 36 C-band transponders for Continental U.S. and South America and Continental coverage.
Thaicom 5, which will weigh approximately 2.8 tons (2,500 kilograms) at lift-off, will join the satellite fleet of Thailand's Shin Satellite Public Company Limited. THAICOM 5 is equipped with 14 Ku-band transponders and 24 C-band transponders.
