According to Juan Villarías-Robles, a top anthropologist with the Spanish government's scientific research body, CSIC, who was part of a team investigating ancient geomorphology and settlements in Donaña, Europe's largest wetlands, Professor Freund appears to have hijacked their work and put a sensational angle on it.

"Richard Freund was a newcomer to our project and appeared to be involved in his own very controversial issue concerning King Solomon's search for ivory and gold in Tartessos, the settlement in the Donaña area established in the first millennium BC.
He became involved in what we were doing and provided funding for probes through his connections with National Geographic and Associated Producers. He left and the film company told us the documentary would be finished in April or May. But we did not hear from him and are very surprised it has appeared so soon and makes such fanciful claims.
We are planning to offer our own conclusions in a paper to be offered to Antiquity magazine which first published a German claim in 2004 that Atlantis was buried under Donaña.

Has a University of Hartford Professor Found the Lost City of Atlantis?

Spend a little time with Dr. Richard Freund of the University of Hartford, and you might be convinced that the lost city of Atlantis is buried deep within a swamp in southern Spain.
Freund, who directs the university's Greenberg Centre for Judaic Studies, worked with a team of Spanish, American and Canadian scientists to examine a muddy swamp in Spain that was first noted as a possible location for Atlantis by a German scientist looking at satellite photos in 2003.

The stone which was used in the work they quarried from underneath the centre island, and from underneath the zones, on the outer as well as the inner side.  One kind was white, another black, and a third red, and as they quarried, they at the same time hollowed out double docks, having roofs formed out of the native rock.  Some of their buildings were simple, but in others they put together different stones, varying the colour to please the eye, and to be a natural source of delight.

Archaeologists have begun the search for an ancient civilisation in southern Spain that some believe could help pinpoint the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

A team of researchers from Spain's Higher Council for Scientific Study (CSIC) are examining a marshy area of Andalusian parkland to find evidence of a 3,000-year-old settlement.
They believe that Tartessos, a wealthy civilisation in southern Iberia that predates the Phoenicians, may have had its capital in the heart of what is now the Donana national park.

The secrets of a lost city that may have inspired one of the world's most enduring myths - the fable of Atlantis - have been brought to light from beneath the waters off southern Greece.
Explored by an Anglo-Greek team of archaeologists and marine geologists and known as Pavlopetri, the sunken settlement dates back some 5,000 years to the time of Homer's heroes and in terms of size and wealth of detail is unprecedented, experts say.

Many years ago in Greece a story was passed down orally from generation to generation until it finally arrived at the ears of a philosopher named, Plato. Plato retold the story and from there a legend was born. There are many who believe that it was never true and was all in Plato's mind. The account related was supposed to be from an ancestor called Solon that was originally told to him by one of the high Priests of Egypt.
The position of Atlantis was supposed to be in the Atlantic Ocean supporting a powerful empire first established by Poseidon, God of the Sea.

The Lost City of Atlantis is still lost - despite hopes that Google Earth had located the fabled city on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
Observers noted what seemed to be a grid of streets and the outlines of a big city on the sea floor about 960km off the African coast.
Experts had said this was one of the possible sites of the city described by Plato, the Greek philosopher.
But Google said the lines represented sonar data collected from boats.
