A powerful earthquake has struck off the western Indonesian island of Sumatra, triggering tsunami alerts across the Indian Ocean.
The tremor had a magnitude of 7.9, according to Indonesian monitors.
There are reports of buildings collapsing in towns on the west coast of Sumatra, but it is not yet clear whether there are casualties.

At least 70 people were killed Tuesday in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that rocked Indonesia's Sumatra island.

"So far 70 people were reported dead in various places and scores injured" - Sudi Silalahi, spokesman for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The quake hit at 10:49 am (03:49 GMT), about 50 kilometres northeast of the West Sumatra capital Padang.
It appeared to have been followed by an aftershock almost as strong.
