Buzz Aldrin evacuated from South Pole after falling ill

An association of Antarctica tour operators said that the 86-year-old was visiting the South Pole as part of a private tourist group when his health deteriorated. A statement said he was taken on the first available flight to McMurdo Station, a US research centre on the Antarctic coast. It described his condition as stable.

Buzz Aldrin (born Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr., January 20, 1930) is an American mechanical engineer, retired United States Air Force pilot and astronaut who was the Lunar Module pilot on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing in history. On July 20, 1969, he was the second human being to set foot on the Moon, following mission commander Neil Armstrong.
