Ferdinand R. Hassler, named after one of history's greatest surveyors and first superintendent of Coast Survey, is a small waterplane area, twin-hull coastal mapping vessel - the first of its kind to be constructed for NOAA. Hassler's twin-hull design is more stable than a mono-hull and particularly suited to mapping the ocean floor - it minimises the rocking motion caused by wave action.
