Christopher Brown, "The New Ashmolean"

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is Britain's oldest public museum, and possibly the oldest museum in the world. In November 2009, it reopened following a 9-month period of closure and a £61 million redevelopment. In his talk, Christopher Brown discusses the transformative project that has created a new 100,000 square foot building behind the famous 19th-century ****erell façade.

 The Ashmolean Museum (in full the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology) on Beaumont Street, Oxford, England, is the world's first university museum.

The museum opened on 24 May 1683, with naturalist Robert Plot as the first keeper. The first building, which became known as the Old Ashmolean, is sometimes attributed to Sir Christopher Wren or Thomas Wood.

Her Majesty The Queen has officially opened the new Ashmolean Museum today (Wednesday 2 December 2009).
The Ashmolean re-opened to the public on 7 November, following a major multi-million pound redevelopment.
