Space Probe Returns After 7 Years and Asteroid Landing

A Japanese space probe, which scientists hope is carrying a sample from an asteroid, has returned to Earth, blazing a spectacular trail across the sky in the Australian outback, witnesses said Monday.

Asteroid secrets come down to earth

The Falcon became a fiery phoenix last night.
After a seven-year odyssey in space, the unmanned Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa, or Falcon, burnt up in the atmosphere, making it the first probe to land on an asteroid and return to Earth.
But its legacy could live on, perhaps helping protect the planet from asteroid impacts, if dust from the space rock it visited can be retrieved from the spacecraft's cargo capsule.

Japan's Hayabusa probe returns to Earth on Sunday, releasing a capsule into the atmosphere that scientists hope will contain samples from asteroid Itokawa.
If the 40cm-wide conical disc survives the blistering heat of the descent and can deploy a parachute, it should touch down in Australia at about 1400 GMT.
