The WZ Sge-type dwarf nova EG Cancri is in outburst.
The last outburst occurred in November 1996, and the outburst before that, was in November 1977.
The cataclysmic variable was first discovered by M. Huruhata  in 1983.
The 1977 outburst reached a maximum brightness of 11.9.
The nova has long intervals between outbursts, a slow decline from the outburst, and the large (~8 mag) outburst amplitude; this indicates that the star belongs to the rare class of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. WZ Sge, HV Vir and AL Com are the only other reliably known WZ Sge-type dwarf novae.

Amateur astronomer Ian Miller (Wales) reported that the star was at magnitude 14.3 on the 12th October, 2009.
