Lewis Chessman exhibition opens in Stornoway museum

Some of the historic Lewis Chessmen have gone on display on the island where they were found more than 150 years ago.
More than 30 of the 12th Century pieces are being shown at the exhibition at Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway.

MPs angered by 'Norwegian' Chessmen

The British Museum has been accused of "airbrushing" history after a poster campaign claimed the world famous Lewis Chessmen were from Norway, and failed to mention any connection to Scotland at all.

New research has cast doubt on traditional theories about the historic Lewis Chessmen.
The 93 pieces - currently split between museums in Edinburgh and London - were discovered on Lewis in 1831.
But the research suggests they may have been used in both chess and Hnefatafl - a similar game that was popular in medieval Scandinavia.

Pieces from the world's most famous chess set are going on display in museums in Aberdeen, Stornoway and Lerwick from next year, it was announced yesterday.
The British Museum, National Museums Scotland and Scottish Government have teamed up to give people the opportunity to see 30 of the Lewis Chessmen figures for free.
