'3D Cryosat' tracks Arctic winter sea ice

Although Arctic sea ice set a record this year for its lowest ever winter extent - that was not the case for its volume, new data reveals.
Europe's Cryosat spacecraft routinely monitors the thickness of floes in the far north. The thinnest winter ice it has ever seen was in 2013. This February, in contrast, the Arctic floes were about 25cm (17%) thicker on average.

CryoSat unveils secrets of the deep

ESA's ice mission has been used to create a new gravity map, exposing thousands of previously unchartered 'seamounts', ridges and deep ocean structures. This vivid new picture of the least-explored part of the ocean offers fresh clues about how continents form and breakup.

CryoSat reveals major loss of Arctic sea ice

An international team of scientists using new measurements from ESA's ice mission has discovered that the volume of Arctic sea ice has declined by 36% during autumn and 9% during winter between 2003 and 2012.
Satellite records show a constant downward trend in the area covered by Arctic sea ice during all seasons, but in particular in summer. The past six years have seen the lowest summer ice extent in three decades, reaching the lowest last September at about 3.61 million sq km.

CryoSat Hits Land

ESA's ice mission is now giving scientists a closer look at oceans, coastal areas, inland water bodies and even land, reaching above and beyond its original objectives.
Launched in 2010, the polar-orbiting CryoSat was developed to measure the changes in the thickness of polar sea ice, the elevation of the ice sheets that blanket Greenland and Antarctica, and mountain glaciers.
Results from the project will be unveiled to the scientific community at the Third CryoSat User Workshop to be held in Germany at the Technical University of Dresden on 12-14 March.

Cryosat mission's new views of polar ice

Europe's Cryosat mission is now watching the ebb and flow of Arctic sea ice with high precision.
The radar spacecraft was launched in 2010 to monitor changes in the thickness and shape of polar ice.

Scientists have spent the past two years getting to grips with its data.

Latest CryoSat result revealed

After nearly a year and a half of operations, CryoSat has yielded its first seasonal variation map of Arctic sea-ice thickness. Results from ESA's ice mission were presented today at the Royal Society in London.
In June 2011, the first map of Arctic sea-ice thickness was unveiled, using CryoSat data acquired between January and February of that year.
Now, the complete 2010-11 winter season data have been processed to produce a seasonal variation map of sea-ice thickness.
Scientists have spent the past two years getting to grips with its data.

Checking CryoSat reveals rising Antarctic blue ice

Field measurements in the spectacular blue ice region of Antarctica not only provide confidence in the accuracy of ESA's CryoSat mission, but have also shown that this part of the ice sheet has increased in height.
Making sure that CryoSat is delivering accurate data to work out precisely how the thickness of Earth's ice is changing is a continuing effort, and one that takes teams of scientists to some of the harshest environments on the planet.

CryoSat ice satellite rides new waves

ESA's CryoSat mission has been gathering detailed information on the thickness of Earth's ice since its launch in 2010. Through international collaboration, this state-of-the-art mission is soon to be used to monitor conditions at sea for marine forecasting.
CryoSat was built to measure tiny variations in the thickness of Earth's ice. As a result, the mission is providing scientists with the data they need to help improve our understanding of the relationship between ice, climate and sea level.

CryoSat rocking and rolling

ESA's ice satellite is rolling left and right in orbit to help it continue its precise measurements of the vast ice sheets that blanket Greenland and Antarctica.
Since its launch 18 months ago, CryoSat-2 has been collecting data to improve our understanding of the relationship between ice and climate.
