New Microsoft License Ties Vista To Hardware

Microsoft may be capitulating to complaints from other software firms and European governments, but it's getting pretty rough with its customers. Perhaps too rough.
Earlier this month it was learned that the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program in Vista would actually lock computers that failed a WGA authentication check.
Now comes word that Microsoft (Quote) has changed the licensing terms for the retail version of Vista. Customers will only be able to reinstall Vista on a new machine once. After that, they will have to buy a new copy of Vista.

This build (5744) has a number of improvements and updates from previous builds, and has been through daily testing processes to refine quality and performance. Microsoft are making this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations.

Only licensed copies would have access to Aero -- Vista's new user interface -- and ReadyBoost, which uses a flash drive to temporarily add more memory to a computer system.

Additionally, the functionality of Windows Defender would be crippled, and optional downloads from Windows Update would be unavailable to the unlicensed user. Microsoft would also place a watermark on the desktop at all times that reads "This copy of Windows is not genuine."

Microsoft said that server and desktop versions of Vista will have a protection scheme to shut down people who try to use counterfeit versions of the operating system.
The software protection scheme will limit features of Vista counterfeit software. If a legit product key is not activated in 30 days, Microsoft Vista will go into "reduced functionality mode".

Now we know what you're thinking, but this is what Microsoft means. Vista will let you use a browser but not all the time. Microsoft said: "Windows Vista will have a reduced functionality mode but one that is enhanced."

The screen will show a little sign saying "this copy of Windows is not genuine", while Aero won't work and the ability to use a PC will be impaired.

FairUse4WM will extract the personally identifiable information (description keys) from Media Player for the purpose of allowing the user to improve the interoperability of legitimately acquired media files. At least one file with an active license is necessary.
FairUse4WM is a GUI version of drmdbg that supports individualisation version .3930 and some WM11 versions.
This program is only designed and intended to enable fair-use rights to purchased media.

Windows Media Player 11 is designed to work with all versions of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, including Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N. Beta 2 includes fixed issues from Beta 1.
