The odds of it happening are astronomical, but not impossible, as one schoolboy found out when he was struck by a passing meteorite.
The rock flew down from space at speeds of 30,000mph, and grazed past 14-year-old Gerrit Blank as he made his way to school.

Un ragazzo tedesco di 14 anni è sopravvissuto per puro caso all'impatto con un meteorite delle dimensioni di fagiolo, entrato nell'atmosfera terrestre ad una velocità di circa 48,000 chilometri orari.
Gerrit Blank, questo il nome del ragazzo, stava seguendo il tragitto tra la sua abitazione e la scuola del paese, quando un lampo di luce ed un fragore assordante lo hanno lasciato stordito. Prontamente rinvenuto, Gerrit si è ritrovato con un foro da parte a parte della mano destra, a pochi centimetri da un cratere fumigante di circa trenta centimetri di diametro.

A schoolboy has survived a direct hit by a meteorite after it fell to earth at 30,000mph.
Gerrit Blank, 14, was on his way to school when he saw "ball of light" heading straight towards him from the sky.
A red hot, pea-sized piece of rock then hit his hand before bouncing off and causing a foot wide crater in the ground.
