Are you a Martian?

Are we all Martians? According to many planetary scientists, it's conceivable that all life on Earth is descended from organisms that originated on Mars and were carried here aboard meteorites. If that's the case, an instrument being developed by researchers at MIT and Harvard could provide the clinching evidence.
In order to detect signs of past or present life on Mars - if it is in fact true that we're related - then a promising strategy would be to search for DNA or RNA, and specifically for particular sequences of these molecules that are nearly universal in all forms of terrestrial life. That's the strategy being pursued by MIT research scientist Christopher Carr and postdoctoral associate Clarissa Lui, working with Maria Zuber, head of MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), and Gary Ruvkun, a molecular biologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, who came up with the instrument concept and put together the initial team. Lui presented a summary of their proposed instrument, called the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes (SETG), at the IEEE Aerospace Conference this month in Big Sky, Mont.

NASA Statement on Astrobiology Paper by Richard Hoover

"NASA is a scientific and technical agency committed to a culture of openness with the media and public. While we value the free exchange of ideas, data, and information as part of scientific and technical inquiry, NASA cannot stand behind or support a scientific claim unless it has been peer-reviewed or thoroughly examined by other qualified experts. This paper was submitted in 2007 to the International Journal of Astrobiology. However, the peer review process was not completed for that submission. NASA also was unaware of the recent submission of the paper to the Journal of Cosmology or of the paper's subsequent publication. Additional questions should be directed to the author of the paper."

Harvard Debates Life on Other Planets

Harvard Astronomy Lecturer Howard A. Smith recently declared that life beyond Earth is impossible, after examining some 500 planets and finding that they were all hostile to life, but not all members of the Harvard community are convinced.
President and Founder of the Harvard College Association Group Promoted to Inter-Planetary Expansion Benjamin M. Zagorsky '12 believes that the probability extra-terrestrial life, most likely some form of bacteria, exists in the universe is close to 100 percent. And in our galaxy, he said the probability is around 40 percent.

Albion scientists research life's origins

With a $121,000 boost from NASA, two Albion College scientists hope to find new clues into the possible origin of life on Earth.
The college recently won a competitive grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Astrobiology Institute to fund "shock chemistry" research. That's the study of how substances react under the pressure and heat of extreme impacts, said Nicolle Zellner, Albion College's associate professor of physics.
Specifically, the Albion College researchers are wondering how the basic building blocks of life might react to the atmospheric breach involved with hitching a ride to Earth on a meteorite.

Alien life deemed impossible by analysis of 500 planets

Howard Smith, a senior astrophysicist at Harvard, made the claim that we are alone in the universe after an analysis of the 500 planets discovered so far showed all were hostile to life.
Dr Smith said the extreme conditions found so far on planets discovered outside out Solar System are likely to be the norm, and that the hospitable conditions on Earth could be unique.

Telltale chemistry could betray ET

Alien life might be hard to find for the simple reason that it is fundamentally unlike Earth life. It might not use DNA, or contain protein. But whatever and wherever it is, its tendency to chemically alter its environment might just give it away.
Life has had a radical impact on Earth's chemistry - perhaps most notably leading to soaring atmospheric oxygen concentrations around 2.2 billion years ago. If life has had a comparable impact elsewhere in the solar system, the relative abundances of chemicals key for its survival - whatever they may be - could betray its presence.
